An additional objective was to design a secondary path of stepping stones through the centerline of the roof for better access across the roof. There was an existing pathway of stepping stones around the entire perimeter of the garden. However, given the existing stepping stones' close proximity to the roof’s edge and the lack of guard rails, the path was uncomfortable to negotiate. After presenting the structural engineer with our design for a secondary path, and discussing the additional weight on the roof, we received permission to place a curved linear stepping stone path, for which we chose a series of Pennsylvania quartzite tiles. The new path allows travel through the centerline of the roof and adjacent to the six vegetable boxes. The custom vegetable boxes are painted aluminum raised boxes, designed and fabricated by Stride Studios, for the upper end of the roof to match the style of metal work found on the home’s exterior features.
